Canadian musician Paul De Lisle’s band Smash Mouth is celebrating the 20th anniversary of “All Star” with an official remix of the song.
“Over the years, it seems like hundreds of remixes of ‘All Star’ have emerged, and we as a band are flattered and grateful for the love and attention,” read a statement from the band. “We have not commissioned an ‘official’ remix to celebrate the 20th anniversary of our hit ‘All Star’… Until now.”
The remix, which highlights bassist De Lisle’s whistling, was crafted by Breathe Carolina, the Colorado duo of David Schmitt and Tommy Cooperman. “It was such a big song when we were growing up,” they said, in a release. “To think that we got to take it and give it a modern twist is so crazy!”
“All Star” was released in May 1999 but peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 1999. The song, from Smash Mouth’s Astro Lounge, got a big boost when it was featured on the Shrek soundtrack.
De Lisle, a native of Exeter, Ont., and vocalist Steve Harwell are the only two remaining original members of Smash Mouth.
