You need to calm down: Taylor Swift has dropped a new single from her forthcoming album, Lover.
“You Need to Calm Down” comes two months after the debut of “ME!,” the self-love anthem featuring Brendon Urie, and just in time for Pride celebrations.
“Why are you mad when you could be GLAAD?” Swift sings, referencing the organization that monitors LGBT representations in media and entertainment. “Sunshine on the street at the parade / But you would rather be in the dark ages / Makin’ that sign must’ve taken all night.”
She continued: “You just need to take several seats and then try to restore the peace / And control your urges to scream about all the people you hate / ‘Cause shade never made anybody less gay.”
Swift explained the inspiration for the song in a video message shared on social media.
“I’ve observed a lot of different people in our society who put so much energy and effort into negativity and it made me feel like, ‘you need to just calm down.’
“Like, you’re stressing yourself out. This seems like it’s more about you than what you’re going off about.”

A video for the track will debut on June 17. “I wanted you to hear the song first, then see the video,” Swift wrote. “Because the video is very worth the wait. There’s a lot going on in the video so I wanted that to be a separate discovery.”
Swift’s seventh album is due out Aug. 23. In the meantime, listen to “You Need To Calm Down” below:
