Taylor Swift and former One Direction singer Zayn Malik shook the world late Thursday evening by unveiling their surprise (and completely unexpected) collaboration, “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever,” for the Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack.
The sensual, downtempo track features Swift breathlessly singing about a failed relationship with the inclusion of lyrics like, “I gave you something / but you gave me nothing / what is happening to me?” before Zayn offers his falsetto-driven verse, “I don’t want to live forever / cause I know I’ll be living in pain.”
This is Swift’s first official offering since her fifth studio album 1989, which spawned her mega-hits 'Blank Space,' 'Style,' 'Out of the Woods,' 'Bad Blood,' and its lead single 'Shake It Off.' Fans were expecting the singer to drop a new album this past October, which is consistent with her two-year album release cycle that began with her eponymous debut album (October 2006).
Over the summer, it was revealed that Swift ghostwrote “This Is What You Came For” for her ex-boyfriend DJ Calvin Harris and collaborator Rihanna, which she received credit for under the pseudonym Nils Sjoberg.
In March 2016, Zayn released his debut solo effort Mind of Mine, featuring the lead single "Pilowtalk."
