Motown group The Temptations have released a cover of “Earned It,” the 2014 hit by Canada’s The Weeknd.
Kicking off with wailing electric guitar, the song quickly showcases the ensemble’s familiar five-part harmonies and Willie Greene’s bass vocals.
The track is part of The Temptations’ new album All The Time, which comes out May 4. It includes covers of Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man,” Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud,” and Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” as well as original songs.
Otis Williams, the 76-year-old lone original member of The Temptations, said he loved “Earned It” when he first heard it.
“I was like, ‘Who the hell is that?,’” he told Rolling Stone.
The original version of the song was on the soundtrack of Fifty Shades of Grey. It was written by The Weeknd with fellow Canadians Belly, Stephan Moccio and Jason Quenneville.
The Temptations had a string of hits in the 1960s and '70s, including "My Girl" and "Ain't Too Proud To Beg."
