Nominations for the 89th Academy Awards were announced Tuesday morning and there was good news for Canadians — including Ryan Gosling (Actor), Denis Villeneuve (Director), Patrice Vermette (Production Design) — as well as the Quebec-shot film Arrival.
“How Far I’ll Go" from the movie Moana, earned a Best Original Song nomination (which goes to the songwriter, Lin-Manuel Miranda). It's sung by Auliʻi Cravalho in the film but Canada's Alessia Cara recorded the single.
The song is up against Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” from Trolls, Sting’s “The Empty Chair” from Jim: The James Foley Story, and two tracks from La La Land — “Audition” and “City of Stars”. The latter is sung in the film by Canada’s Ryan Gosling with co-star Emma Stone.
La La Land is also up for Best Original Score, along with Jackie, Lion, Moonlight and Passengers.
The Oscars will be handed out on Feb. 26 on CTV.
