Six years after the release of her debut studio album – and five years after TIME named her one to watch – Lizzo has been crowned Entertainer of the Year.
TIME recognized the 31-year-old, whose real name is Melissa Jefferson, for an exceptional year that included 2016's “Good As Hell” and 2017's “Truth Hurts” finally becoming hits.
She also earned an impressive eight Grammy nominations, including for Best New Artist.
“I’ve been doing positive music for a long-ass time,” Lizzo told the magazine. “Then the culture changed. There were a lot of things that weren’t popular but existed, like body positivity, which at first was a form of protest for fat bodies and black women and has now become a trendy, commercialized thing.
"Now I’ve seen it reach the mainstream. Suddenly I’m mainstream!”
If you don't agree with TIME's choice, you're best to keep it to yourself. "When people challenge my talent, they challenge whether I deserve to be here. They challenge my blackness," said Lizzo. "I’m like, ‘Oh! I can easily just let your a** know right now in 132 characters why you’re f**king wrong.'"
