Praise Lorde, because Miss Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor is FINALLY back with new music! The 20-year-old has been keeping relatively quite about the new music she's been working on, teasing small tidbits of information here in there, but the New Zealand native has released her brand new single "Green Light," and its accompanying music video directed by Grant Singer today (March 2)."
"Green Light" was premiered on over 125 iHeartMedia radio stations across the country, as well as on the iHeartRadio app. And now, with iHeartRadio All Access on demand, when listeners hear "Green Light" on the radio, for the first time ever, they can instantly replay the song and even save it directly to their playlist.
"Green Light" is the first new music fans have heard from Lorde since 2014's The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay – Part 1 song "Yellow Flicker Beat," as well as her feature on Disclosure's "Magnets." The song was produced by Jack Antonoff, and is the first glimpse of Lorde's forthcoming sophomore studio album Melodrama, which is the follow-up to 2013’s triple-platinum Pure Heroine and set to be released this summer.
"Green Light" is a little different from what fans are used to hearing from Lorde, boasting a more upbeat rhythm that you can definitely dance along to, complimented by piano riffs -- fans may get some Taylor Swift vibes. Lorde sings in the chorus, "Honey, I'll come get my things/But I can't let go/I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it."
This week, Lorde teased the song in short video clips on imwaitingforit.com, which was titled "M*******A" – which was a hint about her new album title. Lorde also teased the single in a few locations around her native New Zealand, posting pictures on social media of a car with a foggy green light coming out of it, a beach full of green lights, as well as green lit pieces of paper with the song's lyrics like "I do my makeup in somebody else's car" and "She thinks you love the beach, you're such a damn liar."
"I am so proud of this song. It's very different, and kinda unexpected. It's complex and funny and sad and joyous and it'll make you DANCE," Lorde shared of her new single via Twitter. She continued on in another Tweet, "It's the first chapter of a story I'm gonna tell you, the story of the last 2 wild, fluorescent years of my life. This is where we begin."
