Despite being nominated for album of the year, Lorde made a pretty low-key appearance at the 2018 Grammys in New York City.
The New Zealand singer, rocking a gorgeous red gown, watched the show sitting between rumoured new beau Jack Antonoff and her brother Angelo.
It wasn't until well into the show that Lorde revealed there was a secret, hidden message stitched into the back of her gown.
Lorde took to Instagram to share a photo of the back of her dress about halfway through the show. While many of her peers were sporting white roses as an accessory in solidarity with the Time's Up movement, Lorde put her own spin on it with an excerpt from one of Jenny Holzer’s Inflammatory Essays.
“My version of a white rose," Lorde captioned the photo on Instagram. The quote comes from Holzer's Untitled (Rejoice!), and the full text of the note on her gown reads:
Rejoice! Our times are intolerable. Take courage, for the worst is a harbinger of the best. Only dire circumstance can precipitate the overthrow of oppressors. The old and corrupt must be laid to waste before the just can triumph. Opposition identifies and isolates the enemy. Conflict of interest must be seen for what it is. Do not support palliative gestures; they confuse the people and delay the inevitable confrontation. Delay is not tolerated for it jeopardizes the well-being of the majority. Contradiction will be heightened. The reckoning will be hastened by the staging of seed disturbances. The apocalypse will blossom.
