Lorde wants to be Canadian. Well, sort of.
In a new interview, the New Zealand-born singer-songwriter named two Canadian music legends as the type of artist she wants to be.
“I want to be Leonard Cohen. I want to be Joni f***ing Mitchell,” Lorde told The Guardian. “And that takes time.”
Cohen, who died last November, was born in Montreal. Mitchell, 73, was born in Fort Macleod, Alberta.
Lorde, 20, mentioned the two icons while discussing her drive to become better at what she does.
“I want to be really, really good one day,” she said. “I think I’m pretty good now. I think I’ve made a good start.”
Lorde also named Paul Simon as a role model.
The “Green Light” singer also talked about fans’ expectations for her sophomore album.
“When your first record is so well received, at such a fledgling time, you think: ‘God, what if I develop? And what if they don’t like who I develop into? What if they want me to go back to being an embryo?’”
