Louis Tomlinson has vowed not to return to a popular British morning show after he was questioned about the loss of his mother and sister and his falling out with former One Direction member Zayn Malik.
BBC Breakfast hosts Dan Walker and Louise Minchin asked Tomlinson about the grief he felt after his mother Johannah Deakin died of leukemia in 2016 and his 18-year-old sister Félicité suffered a fatal drug overdose in 2019.
“I’ve just released my first album,” he replied. “That’s what we’re here for.”
Minchin asked Tomlinson about his “spat” with former One Direction mate Zayn Malik. “You’re proper going in there today,” he said. “I’m just not ready to have that conversation yet.”
When Walker brought up the possibility of a One Direction reunion, Tomlinson’s frustration came out. “You've ticked them all off – trauma, Zayn and we're finally on this one,” he said.
Shifting in his seat, he offered: “It's inevitable. I don't know when. We don’t know when. I think we’d be stupid not to get back together.”
After his appearance on the show, Tomlinson tweeted: “Defo wont be going on there again Haha! Love to all my fans for always having my back.”
Walker tweeted back: “Sorry you feel like that. It was nice to speak to you on #BBCBreakfast this morning. Can I ask what you are upset about?”
Tomlinson replied: “I was upset that you continued to ask me about my grief. It goes without saying how hard it is to lose both people so close to me. The least I ask is that you respect my decision of not wanting to be asked in interviews about something so painfull (sic).
“I'm lucky enough to have a creative outlet for me to talk about grief this doesn't however give you the right to talk about it for gossip purposes.”
Walker insisted the hosts were asking about the song “Two of Us” off Tomlinson’s album Walls. “We know it's painful which is why we didn't dwell on it. No intention to upset you or be 'gossipy' about it at all. That's not our style on #BBCBreakfast.”
In a statement, a BBC spokesperson said: “We wanted to cover all aspects of Louis's life that have influenced his new album and feel the questioning was fair.”
Tomlinson seemed to want to put it behind him. “Anyway f**k the negativity now,” he tweeted. “It’s been a siiiiick week.”
