Sam Jayne, frontman of U.S. indie band Love as Laughter, has died at 46.
The musician’s body was found in his 2000 Chevy Tahoe three days after being reported missing. He was last heard from on Dec. 7.
According to the NYPD, there was no sign of criminality.
“The search for Sam Jayne has concluded and our hearts are broken,” former bandmate Zeke Howard wrote in an Instagram post. “Our dear Sam is no longer with us but his memory and impact will endure. Please respect the privacy of the family at this time. More information will be shared as it becomes known. Please be patient as we mourn this loss.”
Love as Laughter's Ivan Berko tweeted: "Thanks Sam miss you."
Jayne co-founded the post-hardcore band Lync in the ‘90s in Olympia, Washington and released one album. He went on to create Love as Laughter, which put out six studio albums between 1996 and 2008. He co-wrote “Forcefield” and contributed vocals to Beck’s 1994 album One Foot in the Grave and backed Modest Mouse for its 2005 appearance as musical guest on SNL.
Jayne, who moved to New York in 2001, had been working as a bartender at Clem’s in Williamsburg, NY and at The Pequot bar on Fishers Island, NY.
“Our heart is broken, just seems not real,” read a tribute to Jayne on the Clem’s Instagram page. “Our memory of Sam will never fade, and his famed Mets Hat will hang in the bar in perpetuity. We love you bud. We miss you.”
Jayne’s final Instagram post was an image of an alert for two missing children that he captioned: “If you see these 12 yr olds please report them what if they suck at driving.”
