Maddie Poppe, a 20-year-old from Iowa, was crowned the winner of the rebooted American Idol on Monday night.
Poppe is the 16th winner in the show’s history and its fifth female winner.
In Season 10 of The Voice, Poppe took part in blind auditions but failed to get any of the coaches to turn their chair around.
During Monday’s finale – which featured performances by judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan – Poppe revealed that she is dating runner-up Caleb Hutchinson, 19.
Poppe auditioned last fall in New York City with Roger Miller's "Me and Bobby McGee."
Poppe’s song “Going Going Gone” is out now and she will be part of the American Idol tour, which runs from July 11 to Sept. 16. There are no Canadian stops. The winner also receives a deal with Hollywood Records.
Monday’s two-hour results show included performances by Nick Jonas, Darius Rucker, Bebe Rexha, and Patti LaBelle.
American Idol debuted in 2002 on Fox and ran for 15 seasons before being cancelled in 2016. ABC picked up the rights and resurrected the show this year.
The show’s popularity has declined significantly and many of its winners have struggled to have post-Idol success (for every Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood there is a Lee DeWyze and Nick Fradiani).
