Madonna may not be rushing back to Russia after admitting she owes the government $1 million (all figures U.S.).
The 61-year-old shared a video clip on Instagram on Monday in which she commented on equality for the LGBT community during a 2012 concert in Saint Petersburg.
“I’m here to say that the gay community and gay people here and all around the world have the same rights to be treated with dignity, with respect, with tolerance, with compassion, with love,” Madonna said. “Are you with me?”
She called on the crowd to show their “love and appreciation for the gay community.”
Madonna captioned the clip: “I was fined 1 million dollars by the government for supporting the Gay community. I never paid.” She added the hashtags “#freedomofspeech” and “#powertothepeople.”
Madonna made the comments during a break in her Aug. 9, 2012 stop on the MDMA tour. Russia has strict “gay propaganda” laws that prohibit speaking publicly about LGBT rights. At the time, it was reported that Madonna was fined $17,000.
Madonna did not include Russia on her Rebel Heart or Madame X tours.
