Maren Morris doesn’t fit into the box created for women in country music.
The rising country star reveals in an essay she wrote for Lenny Letter, a website created by actress Lena Dunham, she writes her country music from an “unflinchingly honest” perspective, one that hasn’t always been popular for women in the genre.
“The frustration I’ve had with the perspective of women in country music,” Maren writes, “is that you either have to sing about being scorned by a lover or sing about thinking a boy is cute and wanting him to notice you. That’s about as edgy as you can get.”
Maren goes on to say she experiences everything she writes about and felt validated for artists “who care about being themselves” when she received four Grammy nominations in 2017.
“I felt the embrace and support from my fellow country artists, colleagues, and even the upper echelon of label heads and radio program directors. I was validated in that moment, and I will never forget it,” she pens.
Maren is currently in the studio writing and recording her sophomore album.
