While we gear up for this Friday's release of both the Barbie movie and its A-list pop-heavy soundtrack, lead actress Margot Robbie has dished on the music she grew up listening to.
Robbie has previously discussed music from her formative years, telling Graham Norton about her goth, emo and metal phases as a teenager. "I would only listen to heavy metal music, [and] I would die my hair black and only cut it with a razor blade. So yeah, kinda goth,” she told the talk show host earlier this year.
In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the Barbie star divulges further on her musical tastes, admitting, “I had my death metal phase — and I do still like that — but I also like a lot of music.”
Some of her earliest memories include a fondness for the Beach Boys and disdain for their UK rivals, the Beatles.
“I had watched a documentary about how the Beach Boys would have been even more popular if the Beatles hadn’t come along and stolen the limelight,” she says. (The Beach Boys' hit "Fun, Fun, Fun" appears in the second trailer for Barbie. Coincidence?)
Robbie also tells Rolling Stone about how important it was to feature the Swedish pop sensations Aqua and their 1997 hit "Barbie Girl" in the movie, despite Barbie manufacturer Mattel suing the group years ago over it.
Of course, like many kids growing up in the '90s, Robbie explains how one influential group ruled her world. “The Spice Girls changed everything and dictated my version of second-wave feminism. It’s like, ‘Oh my God, they wear little sparkly dresses and push-up bras and then have a girl gang? That’s what I want to be!’”
