Mariah Carey went under the knife after being body shamed on social media, according to reports.
Page Six claimed Tuesday that the diva had gastric sleeve surgery last month in California because she was increasingly self-conscious about her weight.
It quoted a source as saying: “Mariah has always been proud of her curves, but this summer, as her Caesars Palace residency came to a close, and then she went on tour with Lionel Richie, she noticed it became harder to dance, and she was getting a lot more criticism online from body shamers.”
Carey reportedly had the procedure – which requires only a small incision and a brief recovery period – “about a month ago.” The superstar was photographed at a public event last Wednesday.
Page Six said Carey’s rep declined requests for comment.
Entertainment Tonight reported that Carey had the procedure “about six weeks ago.” It quoted a source as saying: “She always fluctuates and it makes her upset. She lives in denial about it; she has the tags cut out of clothes, so she can be blissfully unaware of her size.”
ET, which was also not able to get confirmation from Carey's rep, called the surgery “a new beginning” for the pop singer.
Carey recently announced she has parted ways with manager Stella Bulochnikov. There are also reports that she is set to announce a new two-year Las Vegas residency at The Venetian.
