Mary J. Blige opened up last week about a recent low point in her life.
“I was homeless last year,” the singer revealed at the unveiling of her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Blige was going through a tumultuous divorce from Martin Isaacs, her husband of 14 years, when music mogul Jimmy Iovine and wife Liberty took her in.
“I will never forget that,” she said.
Blige admitted: “There’s been times in my career that I didn’t even want to step outside my house because I’ve been hurt so bad.”
The R&B star also recalled growing up in the projects of Yonkers, New York. “We had love in our home but when we stepped out that door it was hell,” shared Blige. “We learned how to survive.”

Blige, who received the Walk of Fame honour on her 47th birthday, said she is grateful because “I’ve earned it probably three times.”
On hand for the unveiling were Sean “Diddy” Combs, producer Jimmy Jam and actor Garrett Hedlund.
Stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame cost about $40,000 U.S. and are typically timed by studios and record labels to coincide with a new release. Blige is being touted for an Oscar nomination for her role in Mudbound.
