Mary J. Blige has been nominated for two Oscars this year, following her role in Mudbound.
The Queen of R&B Soul has been nominated for both Best Supporting Actress, as well as Best Original Song for “Mighty River.” Blige wrote and performed the track exclusively for the film.
Mudbound was released on Netflix in November. Directed by Dee Rees, the film tells the stories of two families, one black and one white, and how they both try to survive in a rural part of Mississippi during the Jim Crow era.
“It’s very empowering. I feel like I’m part of something so incredible right now because we’re taking our place in the world,” Blige previously told Entertainment Tonight about working on the female-led film. “We are equals.”
The 90th Annual Academy Awards will be broadcast live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on March 4th.
