Matchbox Twenty, the band best known for hits like “3 AM” and “Bent,” announced plans on Monday for a summer tour that includes two stops in Canada.
It’s the first tour by the band since a 2017 reunion to mark the 20th anniversary of its debut album Yourself or Someone Like You.
“I’m proud to be a part of the greatest pop rock band in the world and I can’t wait to play with them again,” said frontman Rob Thomas, in a release. "Stepping on stage with Matchbox and sharing those songs with the fans feels as natural as breathing to me at this point.”
The tour, which features opening act The Wallflowers, includes shows at Toronto’s Budweiser Stage on Aug. 30 and Vancouver’s Rogers Arena on Sept. 16. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Jan. 17.
Last April, Thomas spoke to iHeartRadio.ca about the early days of Matchbox Twenty.
“We were this band that had this really successful record and the record itself was the story,” he recalled. “We said ‘no’ to everything. We didn’t do commercials, we didn’t movies, we didn’t do anything because that was just the way you did it. You put out your record and you just f**king played your record.”
Thomas added: “When we had all that success with that first record, we were an easy target. We were easily uncool. We took somebody else’s idea of us not being cool and turned it into a badge of honour.
“We think our songs are f**king cool. We think our songs are famous, and that’s what should really matter.”
