Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine shared the news Monday that he is battling throat cancer.

“It’s clearly something to be respected and faced head on – but I’ve faced obstacles before,” the rocker wrote in an Instagram post. “I’m working closely with my doctors, and we’ve mapped out a treatment plan which they feel has a 90% success rate. Treatment has already begun.”

Mustaine, 57, has been lead vocalist of Megadeth since 1983. Prior to that he played guitar in Metallica.

As a result of Mustaine’s diagnosis, Megadeth is cancelling shows – including several in Canada this month and next.

“Megadeth will be back on the road ASAP,” Mustaine promised. “Meanwhile, Kiko, David, Dirk and I are in the studio, working on the follow up to Dystopia – which I can’t wait for everyone to hear.”
