Kirk Hammett of Metallica took to Twitter on Friday to lash out at U.S. president Donald Trump and his administration.
“Trump's Inaugural Address and his asking us to put America first sounds, to me, familiar to what was said in speeches going around Germany in the 1930s and later Russia in the 1940s,” the guitarist shared.
“Pay attention people! Stand up for truth, compassion and togetherness. Don't settle for anything less.”
The 54-year-old rocker, whose mother is Filipino, urged Americans to “reject lies, fear mongering and misguided anger.”
Hammett tweeted: “The system wants us divided, so it’s easier to control us emotionally.”
He reacted to Trump’s dark inaugural speech and the bleak picture of America he painted.
“To say America is not great, that it lacks greatness, sets up a scenario for manipulation and control from others,” Hammett tweeted. “Pay attention people! America never stopped being great!!
“America is one of the wealthiest and most prosperous nations on the planet. I'm proud of America!!”
Hammett said citizens need to reject “American carnage” — a phrase Trump used in his address — and “remember the great America of today.”
The rock star said Trump and his administration have a “thirst for greed and power” and called them “Earth killers” for denying climate change.
“One final thing,” tweeted Hammett. “If we don't put up a fight we risk losing our rights.
“Defend Democracy from those who want to crush it!”
