Michael Jackson’s estate has filed a lawsuit against Walt Disney Co. and ABC over The Last Days Of Michael Jackson, a documentary that aired last week and details the pop legend’s childhood, career and death.
The lawsuit alleges the documentary used songs, never-before-seen interviews and music videos without obtaining permission, and claims the estate made objections to the use of the material prior to broadcast.
“Like Disney, the lifeblood of the estate’s business is its intellectual property,” the documents read. “Yet for some reason, Disney decided it could just use the estate’s most valuable intellectual property for free.”
A lawyer for Disney responded to the claim, saying that the material was “fair use” given the nature of the project. ABC added that the documentary “did not infringe on his estate’s right.”
None of the allegations have been proven in court.
