Destiny’s Child singer Michelle Williams has checked herself into a mental health facility outside Los Angeles for depression.
“For years I have dedicated myself to increasing awareness of mental health and empowering people to recognize when it’s time to seek help, support and guidance from those that love and care for your wellbeing,” the 37-year-old tweeted late Tuesday.
“Today I proudly, happily and healthily stand here as someone who will continue to always lead by example as I tirelessly advocate for the betterment of those in need.”
Williams, in Toronto only weeks ago to star as Teen Angel in a production of Grease the Musical, spoke to iHeartRadio.ca about depression.
“You can fall into depression if you lost your job or lost a loved one, or it can be something that’s genetic or chemical imbalances that you will carry probably for the rest of your life,” she said. “There are so many reasons why people are depressed but whatever the reason is, talk about it. Just know that you won’t be shamed. I guarantee the person you tell your issue to, they might say ‘Honey, I’ve been there too. Let me tell you how I’ve overcome it or how I’m still in it but I don’t let it control me.’”

Williams said she opened up about her mental health struggles last October “so that more people can be open about it, so that more people don’t think that they have to battle this by themselves.”
The singer said she is marrying pastor Chad Johnson this summer. “I’m so excited. He’s an awesome, awesome man,” she said. “We’re excited to be moving forward.” As for children, Williams admitted: “You know what, we would love children.”
