For the first time in 20 years, two women are nominated for Entertainer of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards (CMAs).
Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood are up against Eric Church, Luke Combs and Keith Urban in the category.
Noticeably absent is Garth Brooks, who said in July that he was taking himself out of consideration after winning the award a record seven times. (The CMA said its rules “do not allow individuals to remove themselves from the balloting process at any point.)
In 2000, Faith Hill and the group now known as The Chicks were up for Entertainer of the Year. Two female solo artists haven’t been nominated in the category since Crystal Gayle and Barbara Mandrell in 1979.
Lambert leads this year’s nominations with seven, bringing her career total to 55 and surpassing Reba McEntire as the most-nominated female artist at the CMAs.
Combs earned six noms, Maren Morris has five and there are four apiece for Dan + Shay, Carly Pearce and producer Jay Joyce.
Combs tweeted: "Wow. What a morning. Thank you to my team, my band and crew, my family, my beautiful wife ... and to the fans, we miss you. None of this is possible without any of you. WE did this. THANK YOU!" A tweet from Dan + Shay read: "waking up to 4 [CMAs] nominations this morning felt better than ever. thank you so much to our fans and the country music family for continuing to believe in our dreams. we will always be grateful."
Canadian pop star Justin Bieber has three nominations thanks to his collaboration with Dan + Shay, “10,000 Hours.”
Kelsea Ballerini, who was left off Tuesday's list of nominations, took to Twitter to share her disappointment. "last time this happened, I wrote homecoming queen the next day about the feeling. something beautiful will undoubtedly come from the current disappointment. nonetheless, congratulations to my friends & peers that got nominations. proud to be a part of the country family, always."
