Missy Elliott will be honoured at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards with the Video Vanguard Award, it was announced on Monday.
The 48-year-old rap icon will also perform during the show, which takes place Aug. 26 in New Jersey.
“Missy’s impact on the music landscape is indelible,” said MTV executive Bruce Gillmer, in a release. “Her creative vision across production, performance and songwriting is unmatched.”

Elliott is the first female rapper to receive the Vanguard Award and only the third rapper, following LL Cool J and Kanye West.
Previous recipients of the award – which was renamed in 1991 in honour of Michael Jackson – include Madonna, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and Justin Timberlake.
Elliott, whose hits include “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly),” “Get Ur Freak On” and “Work It,” became the first female rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame earlier this year.
