Neil Young, who only recently became an American citizen, is suing Donald Trump's re-election campaign for playing his music at campaign events.
The 74-year-old Toronto-born singer is alleging copyright infringement and is seeking $150,000 U.S. for each time the campaign has used songs like “Rockin’ in the Free World” and “Devil’s Sidewalk.” He also wants the court to issue a preliminary and permanent injunction banning the use of his songs at events.
According to the lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, Young “in good conscience cannot allow his music to be used as a 'theme song' for a divisive, un-American campaign of ignorance and hate.”

It says Young, “has continuously and publicly objected to the use by the [Trump] campaign of the songs.” He threatened legal action against the Trump campaign during the 2016 election.
“[Trump’s] campaign has willfully ignored [Young] telling it not to play the songs and willfully proceeded to play the songs despite its lack of a license and despite its knowledge that a license is required to do so,” the lawsuit alleges.
The Rolling Stones and the estate of Tom Petty have also demanded that Trump stop using their songs at campaign events.
