Drake’s backstory is well documented by now (insert clever “Started from the Bottom” reference here) but Nelly Furtado recently added a factoid.
The Canadian singer told Nylon magazine that Drake hit the road with her during her 2007 Get Loose Tour.
“He did background vocals for Saukrates, my opening act,” Furtado recalled.
Ottawa-born Saukrates is a JUNO-nominated hip-hop artist who often collaborated with Furtado. He performed Timbaland’s vocal parts on her hit “Promiscuous” at the 2006 Grey Cup and backed her on “Say It Right” at the American Music Awards.
In her Nylon interview, Furtado gushed about the Toronto music scene.
“I’m really excited for a new crop of Toronto musicians,” she said. “I’m excited that its urban scene is on the map right now, because I’ve been holding it down for 20 years.
“Drake knows.”
