Even though she hadn't released new music since 2012’s Spirit Indestructible, Nelly Furtado's fans didn’t exactly rush to buy a copy of her comeback album, The Ride, which was released on Mar. 31.
According to @chartdata, which tracks U.S. sales of albums, The Ride debuted with a disappointing 1,814 copies sold. It placed at No. 153 on the sales charts.
For Furtado, who has enjoyed massive worldwide sales, this isn’t anything new. The Spirit Indestructible only saw 6,000 sales in the U.S. in its first week, which the singer addressed.
"I have very few albums that debut high," Furtado told The Huffington Post. "I've had kind of everything happen to me commercially and at different levels.

"I've had different scenes and I've dabbled in a lot of markets so I see the music world as very global.
"I'm always looking for new avenues and opportunities, so one chart or anything doesn't necessarily [mean everything]."
Still, this doesn’t exactly spell 'comeback’ the way Furtado likely hoped. Working together with producer John Congleton, who was behind much of St. Vincent’s sound, Furtado came out with quite a change in direction from what she has put out in past. Could that be to blame for The Ride’s paltry sales?
The singer is currently in the U.K. promoting her album. She is expected to announce a tour shortly, but has two free performances scheduled this summer.
