Nick Jonas has admitted that he worried that the end of the Jonas Brothers would also be the end of his relationship with brothers Joe and Kevin.
“I feared that, you know, we… they would never speak to me again,” he said in an interview that aired on CBS Sunday Morning. “For real.
“It took a couple of months of tricky conversations and navigating all that for us to be able to reconnect just as family again.”
Nick said he initiated the conversation about calling it quits in 2013.
“To call it creative differences is almost too simple,” he said. “A lot of people lost the appetite for what we were putting into the world. So, you know, we were putting up shows that weren’t selling. We were making music that I don’t think we were all super proud of, and it wasn’t connecting.”
He said the brothers’ relationship was becoming “strained” so he had a “tough conversation” with Joe and Kevin.
“I said, ‘You know, I feel like the Jonas Brothers should be no more, and we should go on individual journeys.’
Joe, who admitted the brothers had “blowout fights,” added: “I checked out in my mind that – that was it. There’s going to be no more brothers ever.”
The reunion was announced in February and came with a hit single (“Sucker”) as well as news of a new album (out June 7) and documentary, both titled Chasing Happiness, and a memoir titled BLOOD (out Nov. 12).
The Jonas Brothers are also hitting the road this summer, with stops in Toronto on Aug. 23, 24 and Nov. 26; in Vancouver on Oct. 11, and in Montreal on Nov. 27.
“We got a do-over,” Joe said. “This time around we’re going to do it right.”
