Nick Jonas said on Monday he’s thrilled about being on the cover of the new issue of Cigar Aficionado magazine – but not all his fans share his enthusiasm.
Jonas, 26, shared the magazine cover on Instagram and captioned it: “First person under 30 to hold a cigar on the cover of one of my favorite magazines. So pumped about this one! Thank you @cigaraficionado! Issue on newsstands September 24th.”
In a separate post, Jonas shared a pair of photos from the magazine’s photo shoot.
Many fans took to the comment section to share their surprise. “You don’t really smoke do you Nick? You have a lot of impressionable young fans,” wrote one.
“Congrats I guess? For being proud to promote preventable illness and death by tobacco smoking,” another commented. “But hey, you're the first person under 30 to hold that s**t in a photo on a magazine.”

Jonas, who is diabetic, also got plenty of unsolicited health advice. “Don’t smoke! It’s bad for your voice,” wrote one person, while someone else shared: “This isn’t a good look dude. Cigar smoking can still lead to cancer and lung disease EVEN if one does not inhale. You should probably lead these posts with a warning.”
One person simply declared: “Smoking kills.”
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), cigar smoking has historically been “a behaviour of older men” but has been promoted as a symbol of “a luxury and successful lifestyle” through “endorsements by celebrities” and “development of cigar-friendly magazines.”
The CDC cautions that regular cigar smoking increases the risk of cancers of the lung, esophagus, larynx and mouth and has been linked to gum disease and tooth loss. Heavy cigar smoking can cause heart disease or lung diseases like emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
