Pearl Jam released the uncensored version of its “Jeremy” video on Friday to mark Gun Violence Awareness Day in the U.S.
Directed by Mark Pellington, it shows the titular character, played by Trevor Wilson, putting a gun in his mouth – a scene that was not in the original edit in 1992.
The song was inspired in part by Jeremy Delle, a 15-year-old who shot himself in front of his teacher and classmates.
“The increase in gun violence since the debut of ‘Jeremy’ is staggering,” read a message from Pearl Jam on social media. “We have released the uncensored version of the video which was unavailable in 1992 with TV censorship laws.”
“We can prevent gun deaths whether mass shootings, deaths of despair, law enforcement, or accidental.”
