Ariana Grande’s fiancé Pete Davidson joked on Saturday about swapping her birth control pills with Tic Tacs – but not everyone is laughing.
The SNL star appeared in the Weekend Update segment to talk about his engagement to the pop star.
Asked if he demanded a pre-nuptial agreement, Davidson said he insisted on one because “God forbid we split up and she takes half my sneakers.”
He acknowledged that Grande is the bigger earner in the relationship. “I live in her place,” said Davidson. “She pays like 60-grand in rent and all I have to do is stock the fridge.”
What he said next, though, raised some eyebrows.
“Last night I switched her birth control with Tic Tacs,” he declared. “I believe in us and all but I just want to make sure that she can’t go anywhere.”
It was a joke, but not everyone thought it was funny.
On Twitter, writer Eric D. Snider called the joke “one of the most tone-deaf and ill-timed jokes I can remember.”
“After this fraught week, it was nice to watch Colin Jost and Pete Davidson laugh about meddling with a woman's birth control pills,” tweeted Vanity Fair critic Richard Lawson. “Very current, very now, very good stuff.”
Hayley Schueneman of The Cut tweeted: “COOL a joke about f**king with a woman’s birth control after this f**king week thanks Pete Davidson.”
Generally I thought Pete Davidson was funny, but until birth control sabotage stops being a common form of abuse and a way abusers trap women in dangergous relationships, I'm not going to laugh at that joke #SNLPremiere

After Pete Davidson's awkwardly unfunny remarks on @NBCSNL tonight, I had some thoughts and put them into words. Frankly, we should all be scared for @ArianaGrande. #SNL #SNLPremiere pic.twitter.com/vaxV2O6PUy
