A petition to rename a Broadway theatre in honour of the late Canadian actor-singer Nick Cordero had collected 28,000 signatures by early Wednesday.
The Longacre Theatre on West 48th St. dates back to 1912 and takes its name from the original name of Times Square. It hosted A Bronx Tale, The Musical, Cordero’s last Broadway show.
The 41-year-old native of Hamilton, Ont. died Sunday morning at Cedars Sinai hospital in Los Angeles after three months of battling complications from COVID-19.
The petition by Robert Neary asks the Shubert Organization to rename the Longacre Theatre the Nick Cordero Theatre. “With the passing of this incredibly talented and beloved Broadway star, it is the perfect memory for him and his family legacy,” wrote Neary, “to assure his name will always be in lights in the Broadway Community.”
A GoFund Me campaign set up in April to support Cordero’s wife Amanda Kloots and the couple’s one-year-old son Elvis has so far raised almost $1 million U.S.
