Pharrell Williams has become the first man to appear in an ad campaign for Chanel handbags.
The 43-year-old “Happy” singer is pictured with a crocodile Gabrielle bag in an ad that will debut April 3.
Designer Karl Lagerfeld told WWD that there’s no reason the Gabrielle bag — inspired by the shape of VR goggles — can’t be used by a man. “It’s not very feminine in the sense of being chichi,” he explained.
Kristen Stewart, Cara Delevingne and Caroline de Maigret also appear in the new campaign.
Williams, who has been a Chanel fan for more than a decade, said he was so excited to have the bag that at first he wore it with nothing inside.
“But now I use it to carry my phone, and — you know — essential personal things,” he told WWD.
The campaign includes a short film featuring Williams that was shared on Chanel’s social media platforms.
