Angry fans stormed the stage at the Festival Santa Teresa in Sainte-Thérèse, Quebec on Sunday night after learning that Lil Uzi Vert was a no-show.
The hip hop artist was scheduled to headline the final night of the music festival north of Montreal.
But, at 11:33 pm, festival organizers announced via social media: “Lil Uzi Vert will unfortunately not be able to perform tonight due to a lack of cooperation from Canada Customs. All ticket buyers will promptly receive an email for the refund procedure. Thank you for [leaving] with calm and respect.”
The message was also read aloud at the festival site.
Fans who had waited two hours to see Lil Uzi Vert didn’t take the news well and stormed the stage, causing damage to equipment.
The 23-year-old, whose real name is Symere Woods, said in an Instagram broadcast: “They didn’t let me in Canada today. I went to Canada trying to be good.”
He did not explain why he was turned away by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), which does not comment on specific cases.
According to a statement from the festival publicist on Monday, the rapper’s entourage was cleared by the CBSA but Lil Uzi was not.
“Every effort was made by the festival on every political level to facilitate Lil Uzi Vert's entry into the country,” it read.
