A number of Canadian bands were trending on Twitter on Wednesday after a musician in the U.S. asked people to list five high school favourites.
“Why are we trending…” read a tweet from Marianas Trench.
On Tuesday, Bobby Szorady of Cleveland band Yankee Ghost tweeted: “HONEST ANSWERS ONLY: What were your five most-listened-to bands or artists in high school? (And don't try to be cool and say some hardcore band from Manitoba that three people have heard of).”

Despite having fewer than 750 followers, Szorady’s question sparked more than 20,000 responses. Among the acts people named in the lists they shared were Canadian ones like Rush, The Tragically Hip and Alanis Morissette.
Writer Norman Ornstein, who attended high school in Winnipeg, joked that he resented the question “since one of the bands is the Squires. Which happened to include my classmate Neil Young. Another was Chad Allan and the Reflections. Which happened to include Randy Bachman. And which became the Guess Who.”
Toronto resident Michael Bednarski’s list include The Guess Who. “Yes, they were from Manitoba!," he pointed out.
Ben Kowalewicz, lead singer of Billy Talent, reacted to his band trending on Twitter. “I get it, I get it! You liked us in high school,” he tweeted. “That’s great...but guess what? We’re still together, we’re better than ever, we still love you, we’re not going anywhere and you’re always welcome back!
Our Lady Peace frontman Raine Maida retweeted Kowalewicz and wrote: “Same.”
