Rapper Chynna, who was open about her struggles with opiates, has died at 25.
“Chynna was deeply loved and will be sorely missed,” her family said, in a statement released on Wednesday. A cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
"how lucky we all were to have you. what a light. we will never forget. i promise,” tweeted singer Kehlani, who said she had spoken to Chynna earlier in the day. “today was our last exchange of jokes & those i will miss the most. i can’t believe it idk how to. i love you. so very much. my heart is officially iced.”
Rapper Lil Debbie tweeted: “Anyone that ever was blessed enough to have met or been around chynna knew how pure of a soul she was. Loving, giving, humble, talented, an amazing human being. What a sad f**king day.”
Signed to Ford Models at 14, Chynna Rogers launched a rap career with the help of A$AP Yams (who died in 2015 at 26 of a drug overdose) and dropped singles like 2013’s “Selfie” and 2014’s “Glen Coco.”
She released a number of EPs, including 2017’s music 2 die 2 and last year’s in case i die first. Her last Instagram post includes a video in which she says: “I think there’s too many soundtracks to our lives. I need music to die to.”
On March 25, Chynna tweeted: "6 feet but make it under."
By her own account, Chynna kicked her addiction to opiates. (On April 7, Chynna tweeted: "everytime i hear the new prices of drugs i used to do i be flabbergasted.") She told Billboard her 2016 mixtape Ninety was reflective “of the time I had spent using" and added: "A lot of it was written at the darkest times of my opiate use. I saw sides of myself that I otherwise would have never seen.”
In a 2018 interview with VIBE, Chynna said she had been clean for three years. "It was hard. I had to go away for a minute and I did detox," she said, "but it was a matter of having a really good support system of family and friends.
“I didn't want to be a statistic. I didn't want to go out that way and people be like: 'I told you so,’ or glamourize it, because I don't feel like that.”
On March 23, while self-isolating due to the COVID-19 crisis, Chynna tweeted that she was "looking forward to being a better person after this s**t."
