Rapper DaBaby was charged with battery in Miami on Thursday in connection with an altercation that was caught on video.
The 28-year-old, whose real name is Jonathan Kirk, was taken into custody outside a Novotel hotel in downtown Miami.
According to police, a music promoter agreed to pay DaBaby $30,000 U.S. to appear at Café Iguana Pines in Pembroke Pines, Florida on Jan. 2. When the promoter and a colleague gave the rapper only $20,000, DaBaby allegedly got angry and, along with two other men, attacked them.
One of the promoters was allegedly punched in the face and the other was knocked down to the ground and had his iPhone, credit card and $80 cash stolen before being doused in apple juice.
Police said DaBaby was questioned by detectives about “an earlier incident involving a robbery" but denied any involvement. Shortly before midnight, he was arrested.
DaBaby was held at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center until a bond hearing on Friday, where he was ordered held without bail because of a fugitive arrest warrant for allegedly "engaging in organized criminal activity" in Dallas, Texas.
DaBaby, whose “Suge” is up for best rap performance and best rap song at the Grammy Awards, was also detained by police in Charlotte, North Carolina on Dec. 23 and cited for possession of marijuana. The rap star was convicted last June of carrying a concealed weapon after being arrested in connection to a fatal shooting in Walmart in Huntersville, North Carolina.
The rapper was in South Florida to perform at a New Year’s Eve bash at STORY Nightclub in Miami Beach along with Diddy and DJ Khaled. He is scheduled to return to Miami for a Jan. 30 event at American Airlines Arena.
