A little more than two years after she shot the video for “Work” in Toronto with hometown rap superstar Drake, Rihanna has revealed the two are estranged.

“We don’t have a friendship now,” Rihanna said, in an interview with Vogue, “but we’re not enemies either.

“It is what it is.”

Rihanna, who is rumoured to be dating Saudi businessman Hassan Jameel, offered no details about what happened to drive them apart.

At the MTV VMAs in 2016, Drake gushed about Rihanna before presenting her with an award.

“She's someone I’ve been in love with since I was 22 years old,” he said. “She’s one of my best friends in the world.”

But, Rihanna told Vogue his glowing introduction to her that night was hard to hear.

“The VMAs is such a fan-focused awards show, so having that energy around me, and knowing the people who had received the award in the past, made it feel like a big deal,” she said.

“Waiting through that speech was probably the most uncomfortable part. I don’t like too many compliments; I don’t like to be put on blast.”
