Rihanna wants her father to stop capitalizing on her name.
The singer filed a lawsuit against Ronald Fenty alleging that Fenty Entertainment, a company he founded with Moses Perkins 2017, claims to be affiliated with her.
Rihanna, whose birth name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, alleges that her father has ignored numerous cease and desist letters.
According to the lawsuit, the two men “have egregiously and fraudulently misrepresented to third parties and the public that their company … is affiliated with Rihanna, and has the authority to act on her behalf.
“Mr. Fenty and Mr. Perkins have used these lies in a fraudulent effort to solicit millions of dollars from unsuspecting third parties in exchange for the false promise that they were authorized to act on Rihanna’s behalf, and/or that Rihanna would perform at various locations throughout the world.”
The statement of claim says Rihanna is not involved with her father’s company and that “he does not have, and never has had, authority to act on Rihanna’s behalf, nor has he ever been authorized to use her name, intellectual property or publicity rights.”
According to the lawsuit, Ronald Fenty made an unsuccessful attempt to trademark his surname for a proposed chain of boutique hotels. Rihanna already has a trademark on Fenty for her various business ventures.
“The Fenty mark has become inextricably intertwined with Rihanna,” the lawsuit reads, “and it is widely recognized by the general consuming public of the United States, and the world, as a designation of source of the goods and services of Rihanna.”
Rihanna is seeking an injunction against her father’s use of “Fenty” as well as damages.
The pop superstar's parents divorced when she was in her early teens. Rihanna has previously spoken publicly about the impact her father's alcohol and drug addictions had on the family.
None of the allegations have been proven in a court.
