Singer Ryan Adams took aim at The Strokes in a Twitter tirade on Monday.
In a series of tweets, which he later deleted, Adams appeared to respond to comments about him in the book Meet Me in the Bathroom.
“[Albert] Hammond is a more horrible songwriter than his dad. If that's possible,” he tweeted, referring to Strokes’ guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. and his singer-songwriter father.
“It rains in [Southern] CA & washes out the dirt,” Adams added — a reference to the 1972 Hammond Sr. song “It Never Rains in Southern California.”
In Meet Me in the Bathroom, Adams is accused of being a bad influence on Hammond Jr., who said “Ryan would always come and wake me at two in the morning and have drugs, so I'd just do the drugs and kind of numb out.”
The book claims Strokes singer Julian Casablancas threatened to harm Adams if he didn’t stay away from Hammond. “I think heroin just kind of crosses a line,” Casablancas said. “It can take a person’s soul away. So it's like if someone is trying to give your friend a lobotomy — you're gonna step in.”
On Twitter, Adams shot back: “Julian Casablancas: who got you strung out on lasagna tho?” When someone called Adams out for attacking Casablancas “when your only notable musical contribution is covering a Taylor Swift album,” Adams replied: “I sold more t shirts last night than people who actually made it thru a single Voidz song, bro,” (a reference to Casablancas’ side project The Voidz). “What’s he gonna do? Sit on me?”
Adams also took a shot at The Strokes: “I should've forced them to get addicted to writing better songs. Too bad @thekillers did it for them.”
The Strokes did not respond to Adams’ comments.
