Ryan Adams claims he was too high to remember his 2009 marriage to Mandy Moore.
In a tweet that he has since deleted, the singer-songwriter admitted: “When someone told me we got married I thought they were joking. Then I realized how many painkillers I was taking.
“Honestly there weren’t enough to numb the shock. Gollygooops.”
Adams and Moore announced their separation in January 2015 and finalized their divorce in June 2016.
He tweeted on Wednesday that the marriage was “doomed from the start…If only I could remember the start.”
Adams’ tweets were in response to an interview with Moore in the November issue of Glamour in which she said she “didn’t choose the right person.”
Adams, 43, said their marriage was like getting “stuck to the spiritual equivalent of a soggy piece of cardboard.”
Fans of Moore slammed the comments as disrespectful. When one suggested that Adams wrote “75% of your love songs thinking about her,” he responded: “There’s not actually a single song about her. Like not one. Fact.”
A series of follow-up tweets sparked concern about Adams – who has previously been open about his mental health challenges – but, late Thursday, the singer insisted he is getting help.
“Thank you for the kind messages. I am speaking with a grief/ crisis counsellor,” he tweeted. “I apologize if I caused anyone any worry.
“Depression, anxiety/ panic attacks & grief are very real and serious issues. If anyone is suffering I urge you seek help. And cats.”
Adams also apologized for his comments about his marriage to Moore.
“I was trying to be funny. But I have and will always choose to remember the amazing moments. It isn’t classy or ok lessen what was. I am happy for everyone and doing my best.”
