Cue the "Bad Romance" quips!
The trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux, the long-awaited sequel to Todd Phillips' 2019 film, has finally dropped and we can finally see the much-hyped appearance by Lady Gaga.
The trailer shows Gaga starring as Harley Quinn, who meets Arthur Fleck aka Joker (Phoenix) inside Arkham Asylum, the infamous psychiatric hospital that is expected to be the main setting. They seemingly fall in love, do some dancing, and escape to cause some havoc across Gotham City.
(It isn't clear if Quinn is a fellow inmate or the Joker's therapist, Dr Harleen Quinzel, like in the original backstory.)
Set to Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "What The World Needs Now Is Love," the film is expected to use music as a source of inspiration much like the original. In a voiceover, Joker is heard saying, "We use music to make us whole - to balance the fractures within ourselves."
Lady Gaga first teased her involvement with the Joker sequel back in 2022, posting a silhouetted clip of her and Phoenix dancing with the simple caption of the film's title and release date.
The original film was a blockbuster hit in 2019, going on to gross more than $1 billion at the box office globally and win a Best Actor Oscar for Joaquin Phoenix. But it wasn't without its controversies, sparking concerns over online fandom inspired by the character, its depiction of mental health, and fears of possible gun violence.
Joker: Folie à Deux is set for release on 10.4.2024, which is October 4, 2024 and not today, April 10, 2024.
