Selena Gomez has hit a new milestone on Instagram, a platform she claims she hasn’t used in almost six years.
The 30-year-old pop star surpassed 400 million followers, solidifying her status as the most-followed female on Instagram.
“Wishing I could hug all 400 million of you,” read the caption on a post Sunday celebrating the achievement. As of Monday morning, she had 401 million followers – roughly five percent of the world's population.
Gomez is the third most-followed person on Instagram behind soccer stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
In 2021, Gomez admitted that she hasn't posted anything on social media since 2017. Last month, she told Vanity Fair about her decision to hand over her passwords to her assistants.
“People can call me ugly or stupid and I'm like, whatever. But these people get detailed," she said. "They write paragraphs that are so specific and mean. I would constantly be crying. I constantly had anxiety…I couldn't do it anymore. It was a waste of my time.
“The only thing I have on my phone is TikTok because I find it to be a little less hostile.”
Gomez explained: “Everything I do I send to my assistant who posts them. As far as comments, my team will put together a few things that are encouraging.”
