The Russo family is coming back to Disney for a Wizards of Waverly Place reboot.
Billed as a sequel to the original series that ran between 2007 and 2012 on the Disney Channel, original cast members Selena Gomez (Alex Russo) and David Henrie will return as executive producers for the series. Henrie will return as a series regular, reprising his role of Justin Russo, while Gomez will make an appearance in the pilot as his sister, Alex Russo.
Henrie will be joined by new cast members Janice LeAnn Brown (Just Roll with It) as young wizard Billie; Alkaio Thiele (Call Me Kat) as Justin's eldest son, Roman; and Mimi Gianopulos (American Princess) as Justin’s wife, Giada.
Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas (Raven's House) are set to write and serve as co-executive producers.
Accordint to a description, the series "picks up after a mysterious incident at WizTech, where an adult Justin Russo (Henrie) has left his wizard powers behind, opting for a normal, human life with his wife (Gianopulos) and two sons (Thiele, plus another actor yet-to-be-named). But he gets a surprise when a powerful young wizard (Brown) in need of training shows up at his door… and Justin must embrace his past to ensure the future of the Wizard World."
Henrie posted an image of the pilot script on Instagram with the caption, "The Russo’s are excited to become a part of your family, once again, but we’ve grown 2024, the year magic comes back! "
While Gomez has teased she has "one more album left in her," she appears to be focusing more on her acting career in the near future. On top of another season of her award-winning Hulu series, Only Murders In The Building, she has also set to portray Linda Ronstadt in a biopic based on her memoir, Simple Dreams.
