Unbelievably, it’s been almost five years since Serena Ryder released an album — 2012’s Harmony, which spawned the hit “Stompa” and earned a JUNO Award for Adult Alternative Album of the Year.
Now, the 34-year-old Toronto singer-songwriter is explaining why fans had to wait so long for her new album Utopia, due out on May 26.
Ryder is featured on the April 15 episode of W5, which airs on CTV.
“I got so tired and road weary,” Ryder tells Merella Fernandez. The “What I Wouldn’t Do” singer also opens up about her battle with bi-polar disorder, anxiety and depression.
W5 goes back to Ryder’s early days and offers a glimpse into her world as she prepares to tour in support of the new album.
Melissa Etheridge, a close friend of Ryder, is among those sharing stories about Ryder.
The W5 segment comes just as the first track from Utopia, “Electric Love,” comes out.
In a statement, Ryder described the single as being about “feeling the magnetic energy between two people.”
She explained: “It goes beyond race, religion and sexual identity. Whether you like it or not, the force is out of your control and it’s up to the individuals to decide if they should act on it or not.”
