Man, I feel like an album! Shania Twain has announced she will be releasing her first studio album in 15 years. The first single will drop in March, with the full album to follow in May. The country icon shared all these details in a new interview with Rolling Stone yesterday (Feb. 15).
Twain hasn’t released any new music since 2002’s Up!, which was certified diamond in Canada twice since its release. However, 1997’s Come On Over still holds the record for the best-selling country album of all time.
The Timmins, Ontario, native also revealed a few of the songs that will populate the long-awaited album. “Who’s Gonna Be Your Girl?” tells the story of the infamous breakdown of her marriage to producer Robert "Mutt" Lange; “Swinging With My Eyes Closed” is about “fighting back against pain.” And the third track she spoke about, “We Got Something They Don’t”, took inspiration from a baseball game Twain was too ill to attend, but whose cheers she could hear from her hotel room.
Twain also opened up in the interview about the vocal-cord disorder she suffered, dysphonia, which has changed her voice. “I'm a different singer now,” she says. “There was a lot of coming to terms with that. It's been one of the obstacles in my life I’ve just had to learn to live with.”
She avows that this as-yet untitled album will reflect a less poppy, darker sound. In coming up with tracks, she allegedly put them together herself in music arranging app Garageband and sent the results to producers Jake Gosling, noted for working with Ed Sheeran, and Ron Aniello, who produced the last two Bruce Springsteen albums.
“I told anyone getting involved musically to forget about my other records,” she says. “I didn't want it to be related to Mutt's productions at all. I wanted a more organic approach.”
We haven’t got long to wait until the single out in March, but for many fans, it still can’t come soon enough!
