If Shawn Mendes ever hangs up his guitar, he might just become a therapist in his next profession.
The Pickering, ON superstar revealed to John Mayer on his SiriusXM radio show How’s Life that after a gruelling tour, he considered giving it all up to become a therapist after a course he took piqued his interest.
During the conversation, Mayer asked Mendes what he would do if he wasn't a musician, to which he answered, “I actually took a small therapy course and I was like, ‘I might just become a therapist in a small town.’ It'd be weird at first for everyone, and then eventually they would just get used to it.”
The two singer-songwriters also shared feelings towards the "psychological toll" of being the subject of songs written by ex-girlfriends. Mayer famously dated Taylor Swift and Katy Perry, while Mendes was in a long-term romance with Camila Cabello and recently linked to Sabrina Carpenter.
“No one’s gonna understand,” Mayer said. “You and I are both talking as people who’ve heard songs that — at least other people are saying — are references to us.”
“It sucks to feel like … It’s a funny feeling to feel like you’re being written about, and maybe the whole picture’s not being expressed," Mendes agreed. “The suffering that is from hearing a song talking about you in a way you don’t want to be talked about is not even close to the beauty of falling in love with someone for the first time."
