Shawn Mendes won two surfboards at Sunday’s Teen Choice Awards in Los Angeles.
The Ontario-born singer was named Choice Summer Male Artist and Male Hottie — beating fellow Canadian Justin Bieber in both categories.
Mendes, who just turned 19, lost Choice Male Artist to Harry Styles. Bieber and The Weeknd were also contenders. His Illuminate World Tour lost in the Choice Summer Tour category to Ariana Grande’s Dangerous Woman Tour.
There was less good news at the Teen Choice Awards for other Canadian artists, though.
Alessia Cara lost Choice Female Artist to Grande and her “Scars to Your Beautiful” lost Choice Song: Female Artist to Camila Cabello’s “Crying in the Club.”
Cara’s collaboration with Zedd, “Stay,” lost in three categories, including Pop Song and Summer Song.
Drake was beaten by Beyoncé for Choice R&B/Hip-Hop Artist and his hit “Passionfruit” lost to “I’m The One” by DJ Khaled (feat. Bieber) for Choice R&B/Hip-Hop Song.
Bieber lost Choice Instagrammer to his ex Selena Gomez but “Despacito” featuring his vocals won Summer Song and Latin Song. The hit lost Choice Song: Male Artist to Niall Horan’s “Slow Hands.”
“2U” by David Guetta feat. Bieber lost Choice Electronic/Dance Song to “Know No Better” by Major Lazer feat. Travis Scott, Camila Cabello & Quavo.
The made-in-Vancouver series Riverdale picked up several awards, including Choice Drama TV Show and Breakout TV show, and Vancouver-shot The Flash was named Choice Action TV Show.
Canada’s Jean-Luc Bilodeau of Baby Daddy was the winner of Choice Comedy TV Actor.
Teen Choice Awards in other music categories went to Fifth Harmony, Camila Cabello, Carrie Underwood, Calvin Harris, Harry Styles, Imagine Dragons, and Chance the Rapper.
Miley Cyrus (who pulled out of the show after soundcheck) was honoured with the Ultimate Choice Award; Maroon 5 accepted the Decade Award; and Bruno Mars received the Visionary Award.
