Johnny Nash, whose reggae-infused “I Can See Clearly Now” topped the charts for four weeks in 1972, died Tuesday morning at his home in Houston. He was 80.
According to his son John, the singer died of natural causes.
Nash released his debut album A Teenager Sings the Blues in 1957 and went on to release more than a dozen others over the next 30 years. In 1965, he moved to Jamaica, where he signed Bob Marley & The Wailing Wailers to a publishing deal.
Nash also sang the theme song to the Canadian co-production The Mighty Hercules, a ‘60s animated series.
In addition to “I Can See Clearly Now,” Nash had success with tracks like “Hold Me Tight” and his cover of Doris Day’s “A Very Special Love.”
Nash is also survived by his wife Carlie.
